How to Build Your House God’s Way

Oct 26, 2015

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

(read that again ^ and slower this time)

(okay, now continue…)

“The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it FELL with a great crash.

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” – Matthew 7:24

This is such a powerful metaphor! “The house” in the passage represents a religious life and “the rain” represents divine judgment.

If you read the Bible and live according to it (to the best of your ability) – you’re considered wise.

You are building a purpose-driven life. A life of fulfillment and honor. But if you don’t at least try to live out the words you’re reading – you’re considered foolish.

It’s the same premise as a young girl being taught how to play the violin. Each day she has a new lesson and terminology to study, but neglects to practice at home. (Let’s be honest, she’s not going to sound very good during the holiday concert)! However, the student who practices the notes – understanding fully that she won’t hit every note perfectly – is playing with purpose, because she values the teaching.

In order to build a house on a firm foundation like the wise man in the story, we’ve got to read, meditate, and apply what we’re learning from the Bible into our daily lives so that we become more like Jesus. Trust me, it’s much more fulfilling than anything the world offers.

We will begin to love deeper, forgive quicker, work harder, and live in peace.

My challenge to you (and myself) is to wake up and begin with God. Make reading and obeying the Bible our first priority. I’ve started waking up thirty minutes earlier to read on my balcony, (but that’s just me). I know some people prefer reading at night.

Leave a comment and let me know when you guys have Bible study or quiet time!
