How to Stay Humble When You’re Successful

Jan 5, 2016

“I became a servant of the gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.”

My favorite part of the above verse is how Paul refers to himself as “less than the least of ALL the Lord’s people.”

This doesn’t come from an insecure place in Paul’s heart – as if to say – “I’m not good enough. Why did He choose me to carry out the gospel?”

Paul knew he was unworthy. He understood that (even with all of his influence) he was a nobody. He was nothing and God was/is everything.

I encourage you to find one thing you take pride in a little too much.

Maybe it’s your children, status, religion, career, etc. and humble yourselves. It’s unnatural. It takes practice. But it’s worth it.

As Christians, we are supposed to take credit for nothing that we acquire or accomplish.

The next time you begin to think you’re awesome and it was your skills or work ethic that got you where you wanted to go – think of Paul.

Thank God for even giving you that opportunity that you’re trying to take credit for.

And as John says, “I must decrease so that God can increase!”

Every evening I write down the things I am grateful for to show the universe that I don’t take anything for granted. I thank God for my health and my family’s health and I thank Him for giving me friends and a daily meal and a nice home. We should never assume that we have all these things because we simply deserve them. We have them mostly because we have been blessed with good fortune.

I’m so happy you recognize the blessings others take for granted! It’s not always easy to do! Thanks for stopping by, Sara!

Being successful and staying humble at the same time is pretty difficult for most people (me too). Success makes one to feel he/she is invisible and thus begin to take many things for granted. this post is insightful and thought-provoking. thanks
